Schizophrenia, A splitting of the mind Dementia Praecox, the early term for schizophrenia was presented by Emil Kraepelin in 1898. Dementia Praecox included – dementia paranoids, catatonia and hebephrenia. Whilst these different entities are symptomatically very diverse, Kraepelin believed they shared a common core. Kraepelin noted several major symptoms in his patients, these included hallucinations, delusions, negativism, attentional difficulties, stereotyped behaviour and emotional dysfunction. Kraepelin focused on describing schizophrenia and made no attempt to categorise and explain what he saw. Eugen Bleuler however tried to define the core of the disorder. Positive symptoms include disorganised speech, hallucinations, delusions and bizarre behaviour. Disorganised speech also known has formal thought disorder. It refers to the problems that a patient has in organising speech in a manner the listener can understand. A patients speech can be made difficult because they are incoherent and whilst the patient makes repeated references to central ideas, the images and fragments of thought are not connected. Speech can also become disorganised through loose association or derailment, in which case the patient may have more success communicating to the listener but they have difficulty sticking to one subject. The disorganisation of thought seems more central to schizophrenia than the disorganisation of speech. Many schizophrenics are subject to delusions, holding a belief that the rest of society would simply deem as false. Maturity In The Book To Kill A Essay To Kill A Mockingbird The book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is considered to be a timeless classic that deals with such sensitive themes such as: prejudice, human dignity, social classes, and maturity. Maturity, that word has a different meaning for all of us. Maturity as I see it is an understanding that comes to people with experience and not age but the two usually seem to go together, but not always. Many people talk about the experiences that Scout goes through and the maturity that she achieves in the book but they dont pay attention to the other characters that grow up or mature in the story. The next most obvious person in the book that drastically matures is Jem. At the beginning of the book Jem is much like Scout in that he has the innocence of a young child. For example Jem tells Scout and Dill various made-up stories about Boo Radley to satisfy his need for excitement in his life and for the childish need to scare Scout and Dill. His immaturity is also mirrored when he makes up a game in which he puts Boos lifes history on display for the edification of the neighborhood. After that he shows his lack of being able to control his temper and lack of respect when he destroys Miss Duboses camellias. There is no doubt that Jem was immature at the start of this book but as the book progresses we see a drastic change in him. Jem begins to mature, or understand life more, after Scout, Dill and himself enter the Radleys yard and attempt to peek through the shutters. He loses his pants and decides to go back for them he justifies doing this by saying, Atticus aint never whipped me since I can remember. I wanna keep it that way. There is an understanding or maturity in what he says there. Atticus would whip him because of the fact that Jem had been told numerous times to leave the Radleys alone and by confessing to Atticus that he had lost his pants while trying to escape the Radleys yard, Atticus would find out that Jem had disobeyed him yet again. Jem could not allow something he did to lower the opinion that Atticus had of him. So Jem, with his new understanding, knew he had to get his pants back before Atticus could find out that he lost them, or Atticus would whip him and by doing so express his disappointment in Jem. Later in the book we get to see more of Jems turning into a man. During Tom Robinsons trial Jem seems to be the only one that understands where Atticus is going with his questions to the witnesses. Jem realizes that Atticus has proven Tom innocent way before even the adults come to that realization. There is still a little bit of child however in Jem at this point. He can not seem to understand how the jury could find Tom guilty even after his innocence was plainly set out for all to see. His is the naive nature of children, they can not seem to understand prejudice, but neither can a lot of grown people. For prejudice does not come with age, it is not there to bloom as we get older, rather it is planted there by people around you and if it is never planted within you, you could never hope to understand it. It is obvious to see how Jem has matured throughout the book but there are a lot of other people that matured to a lesser extent as well. Scout and Jems uncle, Uncle Jack, has who is about as old as Atticus (50) also matures a little in this book. It is by a lesson taught to him by Scout who is a mere child, which just goes to show maturity comes with experience not age. In the book Scout says some inappropriate words which Uncle Jack overhears, he tells Scout to never use these words unless under extreme provocation. Kelvin "Thomson's view on the recent age of the world have been for some time one of my sorest troubles, (pg. 107)" This quote is used to collaborate the author's idea that Darwin was deeply opposed to Kelvin's calculations about the ago of the earth. The author further backs up this idea by using another quote in which Darwin calls Kelvin an "odious spectre, (pg. 107)." It is then stated that Darwin did eventually compromise with Kelvin's calculations. Gould uses a quote from the last edition of the Origin to make the statement more concrete. Darwin's reasons for compromising with Kelvin's theory are then explained in the following paragraphs. Gould discusses Darwin's distress as his leading supporters in England, Wallace and Huxley, didn't agree with him. He uses a quote by Wallace to show this: "if Kelvin limited the earth to 100 million years, then natural selection must operate at generally higher rates than we had previously imagined, (pg. 107)." Using several examples to back up the fact that Huxley wasn't standing behind Darwin further promotes this. Building upon the previous ideas, Gould goes on to display Darwin's distress. Britain's leading geologists tended to follow Wallace and Huxley; therefor they went along with Kelvin's calculations and theories. In the book Gould says, "They stated that Kelvin had performed a service for geology, (pg. 108)." The author concludes by showing how geologists finally rebelled against Kelvin, and his more rigid estimate of 20 million years. Topics are changed and a discussion of the challenge imposed on Kelvin develops. The author states the various parts of Uniformity, and how Kelvin managed to work his way around it. He shows how Charles Lyell, the creator of Uniformity, cleverly implied that, to be a scientist, one had to accept uniformity. Kelvin worked around this by fully accepting uniformity and even basing his calculations upon it. He just attacked the false side of Lyell's view of uniformity.

The second function was about nutrition and the data gathered indicated that the family could normally afford to take a balance diet meal on a daily basis. Looking on their faces, they were health and this indicated that it was true on what they were saying. The family also stated that every member addresses the recommendations made by health experts by taking the necessary cups of water on a daily basis. On this issue, they approximated that each member takes between five to seven cups of clean water on a daily basis. Apart from water, the family also recorded taking other forms of fluids like tea and fruit juices. The fluids and water are of significance importance in assisting on normal body functioning and digestion. In respect to sleep/rest, the family indicated that it had problems in achieving the recommendable sleep/rest pattern. The parents stated they sleep for about four to five hours. This is because they spend most of their times trying to meet daily needs. The children also stated they sleep between six to seven hours as they spend most of their time working on school assignments. It was evident that the family lacks enough time rest. This has resulted to some members to find difficulties in sleeping at night. On the function of elimination, data gathered indicated that the family members differed on the number of times that they eliminated waste substances from their body.
